José de Mora – Living Spirituality in the Baroque

José de Mora is considered one of the great masters of sculpture from Granada. He was born in 1642 in Baza, in the province of Granada. His works profoundly influenced religious art in Andalusia. De Mora died some 300 years ago, in 1724, in Granada. For this reason, an extraordinary exhibition has been dedicated to him in the ambulatory of Granada Cathedral: JOSÉ DE MORA – The Spiritual Baroque.

More than 50 sculptures of exceptional expressive quality and excellent technique have been brought together. The exhibition emphasizes different aspects of his work, allowing visitors to experience the spirituality of his art.

From the Studio to the Royal Court

De Mora initially learned his craft in his father's workshop. Later, he worked alongside the master Alonso Cano in his workshop, which helped him develop his own unmistakable style. His talent took him to the king's court, where he worked as the king's sculptor.

Some of his most famous works can be seen today, such as the celebrated Christ of Mercy, which is carried by the Brotherhood of Silence in procession through the streets of Granada during Holy Week.

The Soul of the Baroque

The sorrowful figures are another specialty of José de Mora. Their expression of profound sorrow is palpable. The sculptor, like few others, managed to express this spirituality and deep faith that characterizes the Baroque. They are sculptures that do not leave the viewer indifferent; rather, they move them deeply.

A Cultural Event for Granada

Another reason to celebrate this exhibition is the recent restoration of the cathedral's only tower. Furthermore, it aims to support Granada's bid to become the European Capital of Culture 2031.

Be inspired by the spirituality of the Andalusian Baroque.

Practical Information

The exhibition can be visited with your cathedral ticket until February 1, 2026.
