Saint John of God

Walk in the Footsteps of the Founder of the Brothers of Mercy

Join me on a biographical walking tour through the heart of Granada, retracing the key places in the life of Saint John of God, protector of the sick and founder of the Brothers Hospitallers (Brothers of Mercy). His life story is one of profound transformation, deep faith, and tireless dedication to helping the poor, the ill, and the forgotten – regardless of their background, religion, or social status.

This guided tour offers insight into his personal journey and the historical context in which he lived.

Tour Highlights:

  • Starting point: Jardines del Triunfo Fountain
  • Hospital Real (Royal Hospital)
After a powerful public conversion experience, Saint John of God was declared insane and sent to this royal hospital. Mental health patients in the 16th century were often treated cruelly, and he endured this suffering himself – an experience that shaped his lifelong mission of compassion.
  • Chapel near the Gate of Elvira This small chapel stands where his former bookshop once was.
  • Plaza Nueva.
In a modest home near this square, he began to care for the sick and poor with no resources, relying only on his faith and boundless mercy.
  • Casa de los Pisa – Museum of Saint John of God
The noble Pisa family took him in when he was gravely ill. He died in their house, in prayer. Today, it is a museum dedicated to his legacy and the history of the religious order his followers founded.
  • Basilica of Saint John of God
This magnificent Baroque church was built in his honour and holds his relics. It remains a place of pilgrimage and devotion.
