Merry Christmas from Granada

Happy holidays!

Christmas is a calm and beautiful time in the south of Spain. The season is full of lovely traditions that are typical of this region and often quite different from those in other countries.

Spaniards love to spend Christmas with family and friends, meeting often to share special moments together.

Festive Lights and Illuminations

Even before Christmas begins, many cities and villages decorate and illuminate their streets and public spaces. In some places, the displays are truly spectacular and well worth admiring.

A local company from Puente Genil, Córdoba, has even gained worldwide fame for its creative and impressive LED Christmas decorations. Their unique designs can be seen not only across Spain but also in international cities such as London.

The Tradition of Nativity Scenes

Another, much older tradition that is popular throughout the country is the setting up of nativity scenes. These can be found in churches, shops, schools, public institutions, and brotherhoods.

Some nativity scenes tell the story of the birth of Jesus and his childhood in remarkable detail, while others incorporate local history or architecture. Some even use artistic figures made of high-quality terracotta, while others feature playful elements such as Playmobil figures.

Music and Zambombas

In the south of Spain, no celebration is complete without music — and Christmas is no exception. One of the most special musical traditions is the zambomba.

This tradition beautifully blends traditional Christmas songs with flamenco. It reflects the natural joy and warmth of the people and can be heard in public squares, brotherhood gatherings, and in areas such as Sacromonte.

The Magic of the Three Wise Men

The most magical moment of the Spanish Christmas comes at the very end, when the Three Wise Men arrive in towns and villages to distribute gifts to everyone, young and old.

On the evening of January 5th, town halls organize elaborate parades, and the whole community comes together to enjoy them. It is a moment of pure magic.
