When the Catholic Monarchs conquered Granada in 1492, a new era began. The city, once a vibrant hub of Islamic trade and culture, was rapidly transformed into a powerful symbol of Christian dominance — a clear and deliberate expression of religious and political change.

Located in the heart of Granada, next to the old silk market and the former Islamic school (madraza), the Royal Chapel is the final resting place of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, the Catholic Monarchs. Their daughter, Joanna the Mad, and her husband, Philip the Handsome — the first Habsburg king of Spain — are also buried here. Moreover, the chapel houses a small but exquisite collection of Flemish panel paintings, a true gem for art enthusiasts and historians alike.
The Cathedral of Granada
Just a few steps away rises the monumental Cathedral of Granada, a masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance. Commissioned and designed under the direction of Emperor Charles V, this grand structure embodies faith, power, and artistic harmony. Although Charles ultimately chose another resting place, his influence remains evident throughout the building.
The Cathedral’s blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles gives it a unique grandeur that continues to inspire awe today. Its imposing façade and light-filled interior are a celebration of both divine aspiration and human creativity.
The Former Carthusian Monastery
A short drive from the city centre leads us to the former Carthusian Monastery — a masterpiece of Andalusian Baroque. Here, contrasts define the experience: the austerity of the monks’ quarters and the splendour of the church exist side by side, reflecting the spiritual tension between contemplation and glory.
You’ll walk through peaceful cloisters designed for meditation before entering a church filled with ornate altars, rich carvings, and gilded decoration. Every detail speaks of devotion, artistry, and the desire to glorify God through beauty.
